  • The traditional method of running a movie theater is old news. I don’t understand why they’ve been so slow to adapt, especially when the answer is staring them right in the face; just show older movies.

Theaters are following an outdated business model where they mostly show newly released movies. But people don’t want that anymore. Who wants to spend $20 on some generic Hollywood BS that’s cranked out today? You know what they would spend $20 on? Seeing The Matrix on the big screen again, taking their kids to see Labyrinth or The Goonies, watching Saving Private Ryan with all the power that movie theater sound systems can deliver.

Oh sure, they’re slooooowly adapting. Sometimes theaters will have a single screen with some limited event, not even hosted by the theater, showing something like a Miyazaki film, or a single Star Wars film to celebrate its anniversary. But those are few and far between. Go look at the showtimes for your closest movie theater. The choices suck. Now imagine if there were showtimes for Terminator 2, Seven Samurai, Interstellar, The Big Lebowski, or one of the original Indiana Jones’s. Hell, even movies that are considered campy would be good compared to new stuff today. If there was a showtime for The Fast and The Furious: Tokyo Drift, can you honestly say that wouldn’t be a more appealing choice than The Accountant 2?

Movie theaters are fun! The whole experience is fun! Getting your drink and snack, settling into a comfy chair, and really watching a movie; no talking, no phones, just the movie with premium quality and sound. And there are SO MANY movies! Why is this experience still almost exclusively for new releases, most of which suck now? You want more people going to your theaters? The solution is RIGHT THERE, just adapt!

  • Gmail on mobile is pretty horrendous as well.

Me: “Hey Google, can you pull up the emails with links to the concert tickets I purchased a few months back?”

Google: “Here is every correspondence you’ve had with the ticket seller smashed into a single email with only the latest one visible”

“But I purchased two tickets separately that came in different emails, how do I just get to those?”

    “🤷‍♂️”

The Roman empire still has a long lasting legacy to this day. There is a reason so many countries have the eagle on their standard. And where do you think the month August comes from? The empire as a whole is looked upon fondly in history, despite being one built from conquest and authoritarian rule, with its leaders still praised to this day.

I really don’t think your take on the lasting effects of authoritarianism matches with reality.

Fascists always lose in the end

The Kim family has had almost 3 full generations of not facing any consequences for their actions in NK. The Saudi royal family has been living it up in luxury for decades. Sorry, but I think your statement is childishly idyllic and not reflective of the real world.

Karma doesn’t exist. The good guys dont always win. Some of the most evil people imaginable will die peacefully in their sleep at the age of 90, wealthy, and surrounded by family that loves them.

  • People always make this complaint, but I really can’t blame the movie studios. Moviegoers have shown time and time again, that as much as they complain about the lack of original IPs, they don’t go see them when they come out. Movie studios want to make money. If the public has shown again and again that they’ll fork out $20 for a remake or some generic superhero crap, while completely ignoring original films… well, which do you think the studios are going to embrace?

Even the few original films that do come out have to be marketed in the same way a remake if they want any attention. “From the Producers of Nostalgically Popular Movie”, “From the Director of Big Series Everyone Knows”, “Starring That Actor Who Was in All Those Other Films You Used to Love”. Original movies can’t stand on their own anymore. The few that do are the rare exception, not the rule.
