  • Yeah the person was predictable based on the narrative structure.

    Regarding the final twist

Iirc Lawrence gets tipped off at some point about Benitez’ secretive, papal-approved medical treatment that he then cancelled instead of going through with it. I kept thinking about what it could be, and while I didn’t predict the twist completely my mind did wander into that direction. Mainly because it became quite clear to me that this story would pull every possible scenario that a conclave could have, and with the current church discussions regarding the role of women I thought he would turn out to be trans. Which I’m happy they did not do and rather chose a much much more believable and realistic story of a biological inter person who doesn’t even find out he’s not biological male for decades.

  • Iirc this is pretty realistic. After a certain number of voting rounds cardinals often agree to switch to a different candidate, with such candidate who suddenly comes up as a new option taking a huge jump in votes for him.

    spoiler

And given when the book was written - on the height of Daesh/ISIS bombings in Europe - the fact that a jihadist group would bomb the Vatican during Conclave makes way more sense than if it was a white supremacist group.

The fact that the last twist isn’t properly influencing anything is, I believe, also down to the fact that it is simply adapted from the book.

The issue here is that most countries define the age of consent differently. I think we can agree that when a 16 year old agrees to sexual contact with another 16 year old, the dynamic is different than if they agree to it with a 40 year old. Absolutely. But that does not mean that the 16 year old doesnt understand what they are doing.

I can assure you that the judiciary system in my country does work. It’s just that these people either a. just want to beat someone up and need an excuse, or b. don’t agree with our laws and think it should be prison time for a 18 year old who wants to date a 16 year old, or a 21 year old who wants to date a 17 year old.

Just happened here in Austria. Police took 20 people into custody (13 have since been formally arrested) for luring people to fake dates where they beat them up.

The suspects said they hunted pedophiles, but at least in some of the cases they targeted young adults who expected to come to a date with 16-18 year olds.
