  • I get told I’m a Russian hacker when I post it and people are faced with my “did you download Element or some sort of client?” page. The QR was something we chose not to setup as it seemed to not work too well, at least with our server.

Running it is pretty easy, we have a little service in a space that we can send commands to and we dont even have to login to synapse. The guy making the real magic on the backend setup some sort of s3 buckets and that made data management a breeze. I like it, but discord user features still kick the shit out of Matrix.

  • Edit: I think I read two comments at once. I dont have the brain capacity to sort it out sorry.

I get that but that isolation you get in the “server” you make on Discord does make people feel they are on their own island. Especially tech illiterate people. You can get the same in Matrix. But the way Matrix does things is just different. And it feels like the spaces aren’t as isolated. Maybe thats just because I have only experienced Matrix through the admin side and Synapse

  • It is, you aren’t wrong. But the invisible eye of corporate Discord is not the same. Discord makes you feel like you are in your own space. I found from the servers I am in on Matrix it feels, decidedly less like that. Revolt is a 1 to 1 replacement for discord that is lacking a lot of features. I’d push people to that over Matrix if they are used to discord and just want that again. I’m not even gonna mention Guilded to people.

Its because they can’t be bothered to actually rear children. An iPad is not a replacement for you singing your child to sleep, or teaching them their ABCs, or reading to them. An tablet is a short attention grabber while you are sitting in a doctor’s lobby or driving somewhere. Restrict that usage to 4 hours a day at absolute max, raise it as they age. But they also won’t become tech literate using one of these. It obfuscates too much. So its really just sad all around.

Again with the clueless parents. Stop letting your children use chat apps unsupervised.

    https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.discord

The rating here is Teen, and it tells you all over the page that you will be interacting with other users.

To my fellow millennial parents; remember the rules of the internet when you were young, every one still applies today. It didnt change just because a whole load of tech illiterates decided putting all their info on Facebook was a good idea.

Discord’s job is to provide reliable services, your job is to protect your kids. You think my kids can even download discord? Fuck no. Enjoy tux paint, little one.
