  • I’m so tired of useless AI “features” plaguing every facet of the internet. I get that there are uses for this kinda stuff, but literally everything is not the answer. Especially since 70% of the AI features they have added to YouTube are either useless or inadequate for what they say they do. My favorite is the AI summary of the comment section saying some stupid shit like “the comments talk about the jokes in the video.” Like… How is that helpful?

At this rate it almost seems like they are trying to stop people from even using YouTube with how much information and summaries they are trying to give you without ever interacting with the video itself.

  • If it was marketed and used for what it’s actually good at this wouldn’t be an issue. We shouldn’t be using it to replace artists, writers, musicians, teachers, programmers, and actors. It should be used as a tool to make those people’s jobs easier and achieve better results. I understand its uses and that it’s not a useless technology. The problem is that capitalism and greedy CEOs are ruining the technology by trying to replace everyone but themselves so they can maximize profits.

  • If this is their way of making AI, with brute forcing the technology without innovation, AI will probably cost more for these companies to maintain infrastructure than just hiring people. These AI companies are already not making a lot of money for how much they cost to maintain. And unless they charge companies millions of dollars just to be able to use their services they will never make a profit. And since companies are trying to use AI to replace the millions they spend on employees it seems kinda pointless if they aren’t willing to prioritize efficiency.

It’s basically the same argument they have with people. They don’t wanna treat people like actual humans because it costs too much, yet letting them love happy lives makes them more efficient workers. Whereas now they don’t want to spend money to make AI more efficient, yet increasing efficiency would make them less expensive to run. It’s the never ending cycle of cutting corners only to eventually make less money than you would have if you did things the right way.

  • Technology in most cases progresses on a logarithmic scale when innovation isn’t prioritized. We’ve basically reached the plateau of what LLMs can currently do without a breakthrough. They could absorb all the information on the internet and not even come close to what they say it is. These days we’re in the “bells and whistles” phase where they add unnecessary bullshit to make it seem new like adding 5 cameras to a phone or adding touchscreens to cars. Things that make something seem fancy by slapping buzzwords and features nobody needs without needing to actually change anything but bump up the price.

  • One thing to keep in mind is how geographically huge the US is comparatively and it makes it a lot harder to organize massive protests. Serbia is about the size of Wisconsin which is a relatively medium size state. Add that into the fact that the US is a very car dependent country where some people live 2 - 3 hours away from their capital or even a city. I’m not using this as an excuse, just a possible reason why ours in the US aren’t big yet. I went to a couple in my state and I was extremely happy with everyone there but also extremely disappointed with the turnout. And I had to drive an hour and a half just to get there. I can’t imagine how difficult it is for others in the bigger states.

It could be a lot of cope on my end, but I can’t just assume everyone is just giving up. The last thing the US needs right now is apathy.

  • I miss the days when Google would just give a snippet of a Wikipedia article at the top and you just click the “read more” button. It may not have been exactly what you were looking for but at least it wasn’t blatantly wrong. Nowadays you have to almost scroll down to the bottom just to find something relevant.

  • I’m in the US and I know I don’t really have a stance on the matter, but I’d hoped we serve as an example to the rest of the world how absolutely fucked it can get. The fact that this kind of stuff can even happen is getting extremely concerning. I’m starting to think that the world we live in where there are no real world consequences for doing awful things as long you’re the one in charge is seriously going to fuck over everyone, regardless of country.
