Last week, the European Union officially added the non-native American mink to its list of Invasive Alien Species of Union Concern. This means that keeping and breeding American mink is banned from July 2027.
Oh man, “The Mink Scandal” has filled a lot in Danish news during covid-19 where the prime minister Mette Frederiksen ordered all mink in Denmark to be culled in order to prevent the spread of a new covid-19 variant (it worked btw.). Now the problem was that she didn’t have the power to do so which ended in massive payouts to the mink farmers (€2.1-2.5 billion), kind of “hush money”, and what’s worse is that they didn’t make it illegal to start up mink farms again, which as we all know is an incredibly inhumane practice.
So, a lot of mink farmers started up new farms even though we already kind of knew it’d eventually become illegal via EU law, so I’m wondering what’ll happen this time, whether they’ll get more compensation or what. It just seems so shortsighted and dumb that it wasn’t just made illegal in 2020 or 2021.
