That’s not a blow to an industry, it’s a win for the animals.
So long as the mink aren’t released into the wild when the ban comes into effect, in which case it would decidedly not be a win for native water voles.
Looks cute. Protect the water voles too!
Based on how it went with nutria in Europe, that is exactly what will happen.
Last week, the European Union officially added the non-native American mink to its list of Invasive Alien Species of Union Concern.
From the article…
Does not look to good does it.
I agree! More live minks for me is a good thing!
It was about time. Like 30 years ago.
Oh man, “The Mink Scandal” has filled a lot in Danish news during covid-19 where the prime minister Mette Frederiksen ordered all mink in Denmark to be culled in order to prevent the spread of a new covid-19 variant (it worked btw.). Now the problem was that she didn’t have the power to do so which ended in massive payouts to the mink farmers (€2.1-2.5 billion), kind of “hush money”, and what’s worse is that they didn’t make it illegal to start up mink farms again, which as we all know is an incredibly inhumane practice.
So, a lot of mink farmers started up new farms even though we already kind of knew it’d eventually become illegal via EU law, so I’m wondering what’ll happen this time, whether they’ll get more compensation or what. It just seems so shortsighted and dumb that it wasn’t just made illegal in 2020 or 2021. Source 1, Source 2Great. Fuck’em. It is the most stupid “industry” we, as a species, devised. Although I’m not that much of a fan of synthetic fibers, it’s better than sustaining this barbaric practice.
tfw there’s still a “fur industry”
of course there is. POS people need to have their egos wrapped in “lesser” creatures.
I mean, using fur or hide of normally hunted animals as a mean to make use of as much of the animal as possible is fine.
Breeding animals or hunting them solely for the fur is completely messed up and should not be allowed.
It’s not even the ‘breeding them just for that’ part. Its the insane and unnecessary cruelty these poor creatures are subjected to. It’s worse than any chicken KZ you have ever seen
“fur industry” only describes one of those.
Next: EU to propose banning witch burning, in a major blow to the patriarchy.
As someone in the patriarchy, I definitely think we need to do more to protect our witches.
Sure, burning people at the stake has fallen out of fashion recently, they just get beaten or murdered by their husbands or boyfriends instead.
Or outright dismissed when they’re probably the most qualified in a room. Or passed over for promotion because God forbid they may want a family at some point. Yeah, we’re not there yet.
This is tragically accurate my friend. We have so much work ahead of us.
