I work in games. Its fucking incredible looking at my linkedin. I would say about 80% of my coworkers throughout my career are out of work right now. I started my own company because I was sick of it.
Don’t worry sounds like they are setting up sweat shops to keep these people busy.
Don’t worry sounds like they are setting up sweat shops to keep these people busy.
Sounds great!
The children yearn for the salt mines!
It is very vague and it says it is not for performance reasons. I wonder if early retirement packages are being offered too. If they are getting rid of some management layers they are looking to remove some of the higher paid staff so they can bring in younger folks who will be making less to start and also opening up opportunities for advancement. Over time those management layers get overfilled and no one below them can move up and that incentive is lost.
I used to work for a west coast tech giant. Their early retirement package was: “you are retiring now, goodbye” along with a severance just large enough to disqualify me from unemployment. At least I didn’t have to spend months pretending to look for work.
pre-empting the AI non existent returns
So I recently interviewed for a job that I did at a competitor. I was a team leader. I was a Senior engineer. I was going up against 300+ people for a single job and I didn’t even make it to the in person interviews. That’s how hard this market is right now. I have 10 years in the industry. And I can’t find a job besides a store clerk position at a grocery store.
Same, I got laid off recently and 12 years of experience isn’t even getting me interviews at in-person jobs.
Try from India or wherever they’re outsourcing work to
AI is just a fig leaf for the outsourcing that is happening in the industry. SWEs got too fat and now they are being slaughtered by their beloved mage corps…
Online they been told to unionized for better part of the last decade but the mocked us for it because why would they do that!!!
Their daddy good, their daddy treat them right. They are not workers!!! They are future owners 🤡
Should taken a hint when they were asked to use them Indian or other offshore contractors lol
You literally transferred know how to wage slaves in India and now they are cutting you loose. GG, played urself
This is why I make sure I only train people to an incredibly low standard. Training isn’t actually listed in my job role anyway and it ensures job security.
Yes, training them better would be better for the company. I am aware of that, but here we are. Gotta think of myself, because they sure won’t.
I know, king, me too. I actually told them if they want me to this sort of thing, I will need to get some sort pay bump for it/proper title.
I am IC, why da faq would i do people with out extra coin. These clowns must have been thinking I am retarded, which I am, but I also respect my labour!
Nothing against lower skilled and/or offshored work force but I aint training my replacement for free. I have seen this trick too many times as is.
FUCK YOU, PAY ME
They know what’s coming and That’s going to make America grate again.
Absolutely no sympathy from me.
They like the abuse and attack anyone who doesn’t.
Are you generalising 6000 people here or MS?
There has never been a better time to switch to Mint, Pop_OS, or Bazzite.
But not Ubuntu. We don’t like Ubuntu here, I feel like
Ubuntu is fine. I do understand the hate, though. Snap is contentious for very good reasons, Canonical makes major decisions by fiat rather than listening to the community (see Snap again), and they have corporate motives that are often at odds with the spirit and desires of the greater FOSS community (like forking upstream projects instead of contributing).
Mint is still based on Ubuntu, for example, but I feel it’s a more ethical suggestion than Ubuntu itself.
You could just say Linux, lol.
We gotta stop upvoting distro-shilling.
I find that’s very unhelpful to potential Linux converts. They will quickly find out that there are infinite flavors of Linux, become overwhelmed, and give up.
When you are introducing newcomers to Linux, it’s best to make specific suggestions.
Try just telling someone that they need to switch to Linux with no other details. They’ll either get confused/overwhelmed by choice, or possibly choose one that isn’t user friendly and hate it.
People have to start somewhere, and I see no issue with recommending user friendly distros to get them going.
You could just say Linux, lol.
Yeah, but which one? There are hundreds of distros. There’s nothing wrong giving some pointers to begginers out there.
They are probably the best distros for newcomers. I think its an absolutely valid comment.
GNU / Linux :)
Right and people that don’t know which distros to use will get lost
How are you supposed to get new people in without advising?
I feel bad for the people that get herded by shills.
Switching OS requires proper DD anyway. What’s wrong with giving people ideas to start their journey?
And yet here you are on Lemmy, I assume out of your own volition and independent thought
Yeah, went Mint 18 months ago. Started at MSDOS in the 1990s, ended at W10.
Well done!
I sometimes feel like bare-metalling FreeDOS. Except that and modern laptops, ha-ha, shouldn’t work too well, but at the same time Lenovo even sold some with it pre-installed.
Would just play X-Wing and TIE Fighter and WarCraft II, edit simple text documents, smile at how right it’d feel.
Did you see that e-mail?
“Nope!”
I am sure the people who just lost their job will be super happy about that.
This place is constantly shilling Linux, decrying LLMs, and downvoting anything that doesn’t fit the status quo.
Don’t get me wrong I like this place on the whole, but I’ve just come to realise nobody here actually wants to engage with anybody different and just dog piles.
We are the left wing version of r/conservative.
Already on the way babayyy. Ubuntu gang here we gooooo I know, i know. There are other popular distros but I wanted to start there
Ubuntu is great for begginers, go for it
Way to go!
Ubuntu is perfectly valid, feels very mac os
I will be looking into these, thanks for sharing! Any top recommendations from the three??
It’s not on the list, but I’ve been rocking the same KDE fedora installation through about ten version upgrades. Once you dial in your settings and software choices, it’s fairly solid.
The only issue I can recall was some weirdness with steam’s dependencies blocking my last version upgrade, but it was easily bypassed.
I started with pop os 5 years ago and haven’t found a reason to change. I’m not hugely techy and just wanted something to play games on. Had very few issues overall.
Sorry to sound absolutely dumb, but does it work well with things like steam?
I primarily only use Adobe (learning Affinity) and Steam. I’m a pretty basic bitch ngl lmao! Pop_OS looks CLEAN on their website
Every issue I’ve had has been easily fixable with searching and following instructions. There’s not been many issues, and I can do it anyone can.
Works great with steam. I went back on my ethics and played wow classic for a while though and battle.net was a little tricky for me to get going. But yeah steam works perfectly.
Pop!_OS is my top recommendation for Windows expats, followed by Mint (Cinnamon Edition), and then Bazzite (KDE Plasma desktop). Bazzite is so, so, so good, but it has some unique features that make it a little more frustrating for Windows power users who are new to Linux. But honestly they are all good. Pick one, and if you aren’t vibing with it, try something else.
Also, keep in mind that “distro” and “desktop environment (DTE)” are two different things. Sometimes a distro has a default DTE and sometimes it gives you a choice. The DTE makes the biggest difference to your experience. There are many different DTEs, but the two biggest are GNOME (MacOS-like and moderately customizable) and KDE Plasma (Windows-like by default, but very customizable).
- Disable secureboot so you don’t have to run a few commands and restart in order to sign keys
- Ensure your drives are formatted to a linux format to reduce headaches with steam libraries
- if the command starts with “sudo(superuser Do)” it’s time to read up on what each part of the command does exactly.
- Linux wants you to mount and unmount your drives(filesystems) manually. Plugging them in won’t instantly allow data transfer.
- Don’t be surprised that almost any linux is a perfectly functional OS with fantastic UX and less day to day hassle and management compared to windows.
Disable secureboot so you don’t have to run a few commands and restart in order to sign keys
Stay away from HP. Secureboot will re-enable itself whenever it wants, and the kernel panic is scary if you don’t realize that’s what’s happening.
Also…
- everything is changeable. But not everything should be changed.
- There will come a time when you need to interact with the command line. This is expected, and no you did not do something wrong.
- Have fun.
Oh if your looking for a distro? Mint is a great entry point (and even can support crusty old graybeards as well).
I recommend Mint. It’s super easy to install and maintain. And very easy to use.
I cannot recommend Bazzite. It’s an atomic distribution, which is pioneer tech that tries to make some things better but in effect makes a lot of things more difficult. FWIW, I’ve been using Linux for 20+ years.
Just go with regular Fedora KDE Desktop. https://fedoraproject.org/kde/
I see that Fedora uses Btrfs, so it should be able to take file system snapshots, which are sort of an alternative to the immutable thing, isn’t it?
Yes, but not really. It can be convenient. Just remember it takes more space so provision accordingly for /.
They didn’t have growth mentality.
Cool. I mean I haven’t been able to get past a single 10-minute “I just want to go over the job with you and collect some basic information” phone interview in 6-months.
But ya know. Another 6,000 people on the market is cool too.
How many recruiter screens are you getting? If you are getting a decent amount, your resume is likely good.
If you are failing recruiter screens, you are saying or doing something that is turning them off.
I would see if you can get feedback or have a friend “screen” you.
There are some services or organizations for mock interviews. Utilize them!
I’ve been saying for years the corporate world was getting ready to pull the rug from tech workers. Why do people think educational standards (and as it goes, engineering standards) for software development have been pushed down so much over the last decade? “What if you get hit by a bus??” A well strangely well backed movement to “stop gatekeeping” software development now revealed as a trojan horse to make developers fungible.
Well it might take 2TB of RAM for this buggy prod system to store and retrieve a JSON blob but at least anyone can work on it.
I keep hoping this will spark some sort of anti-capitalist zeitgeist. But labor might be too scattered and individualistic.
Like, why are we all scrambling for a handful of jobs when the rich have so many resources?
“But that’s communism!”
- The USA, probably
It’s easier to fight with each other than it is to fight our puppet-masters.
Because have fun doing anything about it while scrambling to survive
Oh fuck off with this ‘survive’ nonsense.
Literally every bitch I know in America complaining about “not having enough money” spends it like a goddamn idiot.
Doordash every day. Subscriptions out the wah-zoo for things they can be getting for free.
You’d better believe most of them are going to be buying a switch 2 instead of emulating.
Oh, and the thought of moving somewhere cheaper? Forget about it. It’s “not good enough” for them.
No, they get no sympathy from me. They all deserve what’s coming to them and I hope it hits hard.
It kinda sounds like you’re shaming people simply for spending their money on entertainment, food or better living conditions. That kind of take can come off like saying, “you’re poor, so you don’t deserve to enjoy anything.”
I get that there are alternatives like pirating, but that doesn’t really solve the bigger issue: we shouldn’t have to resort to that in the first place.
No, it’s not “all or nothing.” You people keep pretending that’s what I’m arguing for because you don’t want to acknowledge your own contribution to the problem. The person I was replying was trying to argue ‘survival,’ and now here you are moving the goalposts to ‘wants.’
They keep conflating needs with wants, so whoever takes their wants away is immediately a bad person.
They don’t need more money. As soon as they get more, they’re going to spend more on more dumb shit while there are still starving children on the planet.
but that doesn’t really solve the bigger issue
It does if enough people do it.
we shouldn’t have to resort to that in the first place.
Correct, but we don’t live in a perfect world.
You make some good points and I see where you’re coming from, but I think that person used the term “survive” figuratively. Even so, when you say the world is not perfect you’re kind of oversimplifying the situation by making it seem like things are the way they are because of some unfortunate event no one can control, when in reality things are designed to be harder for people with less money, and I’ll try to use your own examples to show that.
Streaming: Remember when we only had Netflix and it had a full extensive catalog, no ads and was much more affordable? Then studios started splitting content just to make more profit, and now every year we pay more to get less content. Even basic plans with ads are going up. You mentioned pirating, but that’s not exactly easy or accessible for everyone, not to mention it’s a legal gray area (which is another discussion on its own).
Delivery: Sure, no one needs to order takeout, but even cooking at home is getting expensive, especially if you want to eat healthy. If you’re trying to save money you basically have to buy stuff loaded with sugar and fat or use shit ingredients, it’s like they’re trying to slowly kill us.
Living: let’s not pretend there’s not a housing crisis going on for a while, where people with money are buying up everything just to rent it back out to other people with money. Meanwhile everyone else is getting pushed to unsafe areas with poor living conditions.
(Also, just saying, that whole “fuck you” attitude of yours doesn’t really help with anything.)
Why are you surrounded by so many shitty people?
Consumerism.
I’m also in a capitalist hellscape, and I don’t see this same issue with people I know.
Why is your subset different?
I lost my job in April 2024 and I finally got my new job at the end of January. Keep your chin up. Look for people you know who could give referrals. That’s how I ended up getting hired. Good luck!
I do try.
Every single former co-worker has ghosted me at this point and even my friends have basically taken a “Hahaha, for sure mate, for sure, hey have you guys ever changed the conversation?” attitude when I bring up connecting me with people.
People suck lol.
Who will fuck up the settings, control panel, registry, etc. interfaces now? The person who keeps putting Candy Crush on the start menu like it’s their life mission?
Hey, they spent billions on their acquisition of ActiVivendiBethesdaBlizzArcaneKing and they’re gonna Get. Their. ROI.
It’s probably just another layer of “quality control” that’s gone now.
an LLM.
It’s so funny going through the control panel, getting to more and more esoteric settings, and seeing the UI getting older and older. I ditched Windows after Windows 7 but remember seeing menu themes that looked like they haven’t been updated since Windows NT
That’s because Windows NT is still in there
The Windows Webcam camera settings, when I finally find them on Windows 11 to control pan and zoom, have been the same for 25 years, maybe 30. The thing is, it used to be easy to find the controls, but they keep making Windows slower & harder to use. It’s such a rat nest.
I had pretty much the same experience finding the virtual memory settings on a win11 machine the other day. Same 20 year old dialog, now buried 5 more layers deep.
windows reminds me of the upper and lower facilities in Portal 2. once I somehow managed to trigger a warning window about the memory usage of 16 bit applications on windows 10, even though I think support was removed for them long ago
“Removed”
Dude a senior manager needs to get promoted somehow
The Microsoft is dead. Long live the Linux!
Window*
you underestimating how well a mega corpo parasite can survive imho
Microsoft has 200,000 employees? Dang
And when they start going down financially, they might invade Madagascar or Guyana or something like that as a last resort and turn into a pirate republic, having enough troops. Yes.
arr me hearties, batten down the customer support, load the software cannons!
You’ll have to subscribe to a premium Azure tier to be able to use multiple cannons at once. Consider bundling services into an enterprise war package.
The cannon bluescreened when we tried to fire it. Now its just stuck and the fuse keeps resetting.
Well, shit. Here we go again.
Is there an over/under going on for the rest of the tech sectors 's layoffs this year?
Dell just quietly laid off a bunch of people last week
The beatings will continue until tech workers unionize.
There will definitely be more, especially as the economic situation in the US continues to worsen. Big tech works under the unsustainable model of unlimited growth, and even if profits increase, if they don’t increase “enough” they lay off workers. They could save a ton of money by laying off execs, but they’ll never do that.
I’ve found layoffs.fyi to be pretty up to date with tracking how many people are laid off in the tech sector. It’s no wonder that it’s nearly impossible to find a job in tech, and these execs and boards are to blame.
I’d be lying if I said I hadn’t considered a career change, not because of the work itself but because I’m exhausted from worrying about if I’ll have a job to pay the bills tomorrow. The only thing stopping me is that I have no idea what I’d do otherwise.
I have a question. Everyone keeps speaking of the “tech” sector. Does that only refer to IT or does it cover engineers as well? Because in Europe it seems they keep struggling to get enough people with IT knowledge into engineering projects.
It’s because the ~*~tech~*~ sector fundamentally relies on different economics than most engineering companies, and that has investors absolutely bricked up.
What investors being sold by “tech” companies is infinite ROI. Sure, [YouTube/Twitter/Uber/whoever] has never been profitable more than a few quarters in a row (if that), but think! They have virtually no fixed costs! That means if we just inject a few more millions in R&D we will finally reach the threshold where we can scale deployments to hundreds of millions of users who will be paying us MRR! Hosting costs are virtually nothing and at that scale R&D is basically free as well! And if push comes to shove, we can reduce costs to nearly zero by firing all the engineers! The economies of scale are practically infinite, they say.
It’s the rare instance where capitalists actually care about long-terms gain a bit too much. The tech industry tends to be single-mindedly chasing monthly user counts first and revenue second or third. Then at some point reality catches up, the accountants start getting their way, the product starts getting enshittified, and the users leave for something else. Did the product actually turn a net profit over its lifetime? Who knows, who cares. Everyone who made those early business decisions has long since cashed out.
Where the markets are unbelievably irrational is that this frenzy has spilled over into industries where the the sales pitch for infinite economies of scale doesn’t even make theoretical sense. Tesla sells physical products, so why are they worth more than every other automotive company combined? OpenAI operates at an enormous loss because LLMs are just expensive to train and run by nature, so they cannot be profitable under the current business model at any scale. Yet here we are. Just because it’s labeled as “tech”, investors are throwing our retirement funds into it. And any time the markets are being irrational, there’s a risk that investors wise up to the bad fundamentals and the whole thing comes crashing down.
In Europe we’ve been spared some of the worst of the craziness. Although venture capitalism is alive and well in the software sector, I would wager that European companies tend to have stronger fundamentals on average (but that’s just a gut feeling, I’m not an economist).
I’m a DevOps engineer, if that counts.
It’s mostly software, but somehow no one calls it that. It’s weird.
is it still hard? even with layoffs, people can get some jobs, eventhough not as high as income as before.
cant say the same for other stem industries, where its already very difficult to get a job in the field prior to even the pandemic. im guessing with all the funding being cut from the sciences , universities might be suffering as are biotech jobs(which are limited and gatekeeped on purpose)
It is, at least in my experience. Further, my recently laid off colleagues have been trying to find work for months, some of whom have been applying for jobs that would require pay cuts, with no luck.
Pretty much every job listing in the tech space gets hundreds if not thousands of applicants because the layoffs have not stopped for three years. You can see what I mean at layoffs.fyi. In tech, 60,000 so far this year, 153,000 in 2024, 264,000 in 2023, and 165,000 in 2022.
That’s not even counting those that graduated in the last couple of years. Those people are in an extra bad spot because they have a large amount of college debt with no way to make their payments.
All of STEM is suffering because of corporate greed and rising anti-intellectualism.
oh yea, i feel sorry for HS and recent grads, especially people in CS, i known about cs problems for a decade. most graduates from my non-prestigious state school are mostly CS majors, and they all complained about the lack of jobs. Biotech is just wierd in general difficult to get in the first place, and mostly a catch-22 situation(the experience is the jobs that already require experience in the entry level jobs)+ the coveted research experience some people are lucky to get in thier undergrad, typically via publish in a science journal, which is pretty much a big deal. i assume this alsos imilar to other schools, space for lab is very limited for each professor, and PI tend to be very stingy of who they let in thier lab.
My bro was laid off in 23, his degree was a wierd hybrid of some programming and tech related, so he dint find a job for a whole year, then landed a very high income job early last decade, until '23, and he hasnt found a job since after the layoff, and is living off of the severance, he hasnt shown interest in finding another job though. my other bro is still in his tech job luckily, they hadnt done massive layoffs yet.
All of STEM is suffering because of corporate greed and rising anti-intellectualism.
How do I say that even … it’s normal. When you are talking about infinite growth being unsustainable, that means that at some point the industry should implode.
They have sort of an oligopoly and stagnation now, which is why all these layoffs happen - the “AI” solves some problems cheaper than people, even accounting for the worse results.
But if we imagine the industry suddenly destroying that oligopoly and becoming interesting again, it still would require less people.
I’m not saying there wouldn’t be layoffs without it, but it certainly would be better. I know from experience that a lot of the people that were laid off were a critical part of the team, and those that remained had to bare that load. It has burned me out several times, because I’m doing work that should be done by two or three people.
Then it’ll even out after some time.
I sure hope that “some time” is coming soon, because I’m exhausted after three years and counting.
I’ve been heavily considering a career change. I’m in government, so on top of the DOGE bullshit, I can’t even look to the private sector for reprieve because tech layoffs have been insane for over 3 years.
By “Big tech” I think you meant “capitalism”
Sure, it’s just even worse with big tech.
Not every company under capitalism is publicly traded with shareholders to answer to.
I have no idea but I’m definitely going to say the tone of rolling big tech layoffs doesn’t stop here.
This would LITERALLY Not have Happened if we just CUT THEIR TAXES! LITERALLY that’s the ONLY Reason Companies LAYOFF Staff!
And if they did cut taxes, they didn’t cut them enough! In fact, the state should just pay them!
Wait what? They already do that? With walmart?
We should have given Elon another billion! Then, we would truly live in utopia. Alas, it was not so.
now its going to be run by none other than VOUGHT, which is also the evil nazi corporation in the BOYZ.
